PERCEPTION v. TRUTH

P: Most who live without shelter are men.

T: Families with children are the fastest growing group facing life without shelter. Most fall into one of these segments - veteran, adult, family, youth or chronic.

P: People are homeless because they are lazy.

T: The vast majority, including those who are mentally ill, would prefer to support a home. Many compounding factors contribute to homelessness including loss of a job, low-paying jobs, economic downturn, domestic violence, high cost of housing, disabilities and illness, substance abuse and the lack of political and community will to create change.

P: The homeless are dangerous - look the other way.

T: Caution should be exercised when approaching anyone unfamiliar; however, whenever possible, stop for moment, look into her/his eyes and ask, "how are you today?" And then, listen.
